ROOM 1 – MOUNT DIABLO
Cecilia Zurita-Lopez, Ph.D
she/her/hersAssistant Professor, Chemistry & Biochemistry
Chapman University—
The interplay between protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) can be capitalized as potential therapeutic targets and epigenetic markers for disease detection. My laboratory focuses on the crosstalk between two PTMs: arginine methylation and phosphorylation. We are investigating this interplay in three different proteins: PGC-1alpha, a master metabolic regulator, implicated in obesity; Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), a protein that provides insulation for neurons and is implicated in Multiple Sclerosis; and BAG3, a chaperon protein implicated in heart disease. Approaches to investigating these proteins will be discussed. Identifying proteins and the sites at which protein arginine methylation affects cell function will contribute to a greater understanding of cellular processes.
